An institute dedicated to teacher training
The Institute of Applied Pedagogy (IPA) is one of the institutes of the University of Burundi. Created in 1993 by Decree No. 100/147 of 14 October 1993, it succeeded the Pedagogical Institute founded in 1979. Its main mission is the initial training of teachers for Burundi's Basic and Post-Basic Schools.
Today, the IPA offers a three-year Bachelor's organised in six departments (English, French, Kirundi-Kiswahili, Mathematics, Biology-Chemistry, Physics-Technology) and a two-year Master's in eight specialisations, in Languages and Sciences. Some programmes of the École Normale Supérieure are organised jointly with the IPA.
Research, one of its core missions, is organised around two centres, the CRDS and CURPAS, which together comprise five laboratories. The IPA works with the Ministry of National Education and Scientific Research and with international partners, notably through the EU-funded BRIGHTER project and the APPRENDRE programme of the Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie.
