BRIGHTER project: the IPA takes part in an Erasmus+ initiative for the energy transition

The Institute of Applied Pedagogy of the University of Burundi takes part in the BRIGHTER project, a four-year initiative funded by the European Union's Erasmus+ programme, whose focal point is the Dean of the IPA. With a budget of around 1 million euros, the project brings together around ten Burundian and European partners around an ambitious goal: modernising higher education in Burundi in the field of renewable energy.

The BRIGHTER project (Burundi Renewable Innovation Growth and Higher Education for Renewable Energy Systems) responds to a critical challenge: according to the World Bank, around 11% of Burundi's population had access to electricity in 2023, while the country has considerable energy potential in hydropower, solar and wind energy.

Funded by the European Union's Erasmus+ programme and coordinated by ENTER Network, the project aims to train teacher-researchers, modernise curricula in renewable energy and technological innovation, and strengthen the institutional capacity of the partner Burundian universities. Its activities include training, international academic exchanges and cooperation with European partners, including ISEL – Instituto Politécnico de Lisboa.

The project's focal point is Professor Emile NIBONA, Dean of the Institute of Applied Pedagogy.
